Several reports have indicated that Ugandans are among the thousands of people that are stranded in Afghanistan following the take over of the country by the Taliban militants.

The reports left many wondering how the government of Uganda could allow to host Afghan refugees yet their own citizens were stranded in a conflict environment.

Minister of State (Foreign Affairs) John Mulimba has revealed that Uganda has plans to evacuate its citizens but only two have accepted to return home.

“10 Ugandans working with British agencies in Afghanistan were evacuated and are safe in London. Five opted to stay in Afghanistan willingly while two are being processed for evacuation by the US Gov’t,” said Mulimba.

Mulimba explained that the five that refused to be returned claim ‘They went to work and nothing is yet serious to make them board a plane back to Uganda,’

Yesterday, at least 51 Afghans arrived in Uganda as efforts to evacuate tens of thousands of people after troops belonging to US withdrew following two decades of occupation of Afghanistan under the justification of fighting terrorism.
