The Ministry of Health is considering the idea of restricting access to public places for people who are not yet vaccinated against Covid-19.
Since March this year, the Health Ministry has been carrying out a campaign to have almost half the country’s population vaccinated against the deadly virus.
However, the Ministry is concerned about the low numbers of vaccinated people despite an increase in the number of vaccines in the country.
The Ministry is now considering restricting access to public places for people who are yet to be vaccinated.
According to the ministry’s spokesperson, Emmanuel Ayinebyoona, the ministry is aiming at having the economy fully opened again through mass vaccination. And therefore, people that are not vaccinated might have a hard time accessing certain public places in a move aimed at encouraging more people to go for the vaccine.
Ayinebyoona added that the implementation of the idea rests with the vaccination advisory committee which is considering the matter. He went on to add that vaccines are readily available as the country has received a shipment of over 5 million vaccines.
He used the opportunity to caution the staff of the Ministry of Health to go for vaccination because very soon, access to the Ministry of Health will strictly be through evidence of vaccination.
The idea comes at a time when the health ministry is in the midst of efforts to drive up the country’s vaccination numbers in order to fully open up the economy.
However, the Health Civil Society Organization, CEHURD has warned that the Health Ministry proposal to enforce mandatory vaccination might be a violation of the country’s laws.
