Uganda People’s Defense Force (UPDF) has launched airstrikes and artillery fire against the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebel group in eastern DR Congo, says UPDF spokesperson Brig Gen Flavia Byekwaso.

“This morning, we have launched joint air and artillery strikes against ADF camps with our Congolese allies,” Byekwaso announced on Twitter.

A fortnight ago, twin bombings happened in Kampala killing seven people and injuring over 30.

President Yoweri Museveni blamed the attacks on ADF rebels, who have operated in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo since 1996.

He further revealed that hat he was in talks with his DR Congo counterpart President Felix Tshisekedi over the possibility of deploying the UPDF to eastern DRC to flush out insurgents.

“The plans and orders for killing our people are coming from the terrorists in eastern Congo. We are continuing to discuss with President Tshisekedi about eliminating that cancer,” Museveni said.
