During the course of the week, the Kampala City Resident Commissioner, Hussein Huda gave City Street vendors one week to vacate and take up space in city markets.

The directive has since received a lot of resistance from the vendors and the Kampala City Council Authority leaders.

While appearing on Next Radio, the Kampala City Deputy Mayor Dorreen Nyanjura questioned Huda’s move to chase the vendors off the streets.

“As leaders of KCCA , we don’t know where the RCC got the powers to order vendors off the streets. As  the leaders ,we are the policy makers and are meant to plan for the city,” Nyanjura stated.

Nyanjura also said that the available government markets can’t accommodate all the street vendors .

“We have  16 government markets in the city , and I can assure you they cannot accommodate  all the street vendors in Kampala,” Nyanjura said.

Huda who was also on the same Radio Show with Nyanjura responded to her stating that RCC is an office  established under the constitution of Uganda.

“RCC is an office  established under the constitution of Uganda. One of an RCC’s  roles is to monitor and inspect government projects and programs. For clarity, anything that touches the people of Uganda directly touches us as RCCs,” said Huda.

He also stated that he acts on the behalf of the President  to serve the people before revealing that he had a meeting with the President two months ago and he guided them on the need to relocate the street vendors to markets.

“I normally put myself in the place of the President. I ask myself,’ What would the President do?’ I don’t act for myself. I act on behalf of the president to serve the people,”said Huda
