Following the re-opening of all education institutions on January 10 2022, there have been a number of complaints that schools are charging parents exorbitant fees.
And it seems parents are tired now of exorbitant fees they want Education Ministry to pass a regulation streamlining school fees and other non-tuition charges.
Today, a group of parents belonging to the coalition for quality and accessible public education has petitioned the Attorney General to compel the Education Ministry to pass a regulation streamlining school fees and other non-tuition charges.
According to the report filed by NTV Uganda, the coalition members want to ensure that Education is not commoditised and reduced into a privilege for a few who can afford it.
The members claim schools are charging exorbitant fees and demanding outrageous requirements such as paint and rugs, among other items, which are not directly linked to education.
Recently the Minister of Education and Sports Janet Kataaha Museveni directed that all schools should maintain fees at the level of term one 2020 but some schools have since trashed her directives and continued to squeeze Covid-19 hit parents to pay exorbitant school fees.
