Following the fuel hike in Uganda, the Boda-boda riders have come out to claim that the government is trying to fight them.
A few days back the price of fuel rose to Shs5000 and above for a litre.
On Sunday most of the fuel stations were selling a litre of petrol at Shs5800 and others were selling a litre at Shs6200.
During an interview with a few Boda-boda riders on what they have to say about the ongoing hike in fuel prices in the country, the riders told Matooke Republic that the government just wants them to suffer and that could be one of the reasons why they increased the price of fuel in the country.
According to the riders, they believe that the fuel hike is political because the government thinks they all supported Bobi Wine during the 2021 presidential elections.
Based on the fact that Museveni allowed public vehicles to load their normal capacity, riders said that the government only wants rich people in the country so they don’t like them because they are poor.
One rider says: “Uganda is becoming a country for the rich so they don’t care about us,” he said.
“They think we supported Bobi Wine during the last elections so they want us to suffer.
“Can you imagine that people allowed tax and buses to work without limit but for us, we are still locked?” he exclaimed.
However, Ramathan Ggoobi, the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Finance says that the current spike in fuel prices has nothing to do with economics.
“It was caused by a temporary exogenous shock caused by administrative decisions to control the spread of COVID-19, here and globally. The responsible parties are addressing them. Soon the fuel prices will settle back to market-clearing equilibrium,” said Ggoobi in a tweet.
