11-year-old pupil burnt beyond recognition in dormitory fire

An 11-year-old primary six pupil was confirmed dead at Good Times Infant Primary School in Kawala, Rubaga Division, Kampala, after a fire razed one of the school dormitories.

The incident happened on Monday night at about 12:15am in the dormitory, Olupot ‘B’ Block, which was occupied by P.4, P.5, P.6, and P.7 pupils.

According to a statement issued by Police, the children escaped through the front and back doors.

“Unfortunately, Amanya Mathew, the pupil that was left inside as he was fast asleep. He was burnt beyond recognition,” Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy KMP spokesperson said.

Owoyesigyire further added: “The Police fire prevention and rescue services responded and put down the fire. The deceased’s remains were conveyed to city mortuary Mulago.”

Investigations to ascertain the cause of the fire have since started.
