SPEAKERSHIP RACE: “I am ready to take on the mantle,” MP Basalirwa

Bugiri Municipality Member of Parliament (MP) Asuman Basalirwa has expressed interest to run for Speakership on the opposition ticket.

While addressing journalists at parliament, Basalirwa said, “I have already expressed interest and waiting for approval from the Shadow cabinet and caucus. If I am endorsed, I am ready to take on the mantle.”

Basalirwa joins Kira Municipality MP Ssemujju Nganda from the opposition to express interest in the position of Speaker of Parliament.

The Leader of the Opposition, Mathius Mpuuga, has posted a message saying, “The Shadow Cabinet agreed this morning to continue with consultations with other stakeholders ahead of the Opposition Caucus meeting on Thursday to agree on upcoming elections for Speaker of Parliament.”

The Speakership election is scheduled to take place on Friday at Kololo Independence grounds.
