For the last two weeks, the government has been receiving public backlash about a proposal to increase the fees for correction of errors on national IDs from Shs50,000 to Shs500,000.

Last week, Nakaseke Member of Parliament (MP) Lutamaguzi Ssemakula raised the concern to parliament regarding the hike in fees for the renewal of National Identity Cards.

Minister of State for Internal Affairs David Muhoozi responded to Luttamaguzi’s concern on the floor of parliament yesterday.

According to Muhoozi, the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) proposed setting tough conditions for Ugandans seeking to change their dates of birth as a move to curb the increasing violation of the practice.

The Minister said the proposal only applies to those seeking to change dates of birth where the “error” was made by the card bearers.

“The background to this proposal is premised on the surge of applications ranging between 1000 and 5000 a month, with 85% of applicants requesting the adjustment to match the 25-38 age bracket,” Muhoozi said.

He added, “This proposal is still subject to consideration by the government and all the stakeholders, including this honorable House, and therefore has not been approved and affected.”
