St. Augustine Nakulamudde Primary School in Gomba District is stuck with two after the headteacher rejected a transfer to Bukandula Church of Uganda Primary School.

The school currently has two headteachers as Agnes Nanyonjo claims that she is still the substantive school headteacher, while Madrine Gwaaliwo, who was posted to the school three weeks ago, also serves in the same position.

Gwaaliwo is the former headteacher of Kabulasoke Demonstration School.

To assert her authority, Nanyonjo has kept the office of headteacher under lock since the second term started. Gwaaliwo executes her duties from the staffroom.

According to the report filed by Dialy Monitor, pupils at the school also missed lessons during the first week of the term as  Nanyonjo kept all classrooms closed, which prompted local leaders led by Rogers Ssemyalo, a councilor representing Kabulasoke Sub County, to break the padlocks.

The report has it that, Nanyonjo’s actions have paralyzed the normal operations of the school and needs to be reprimanded.

Sliveriyo Kyambadde, the chairperson of the parents and teachers’ association, said Nanyonjo was an acting headteacher, and posting her to another school as a deputy headteacher seems to have annoyed her.

Godfrey Kalyango, the Gomba District Education Officer, said they have conducted more than four meetings to have Nanyonjo’s issues resolved, but the latter has adamantly refused to relocate to her new workstation.

“That lady has become stubborn as the district education department, we have forwarded her issue to the chief administrative officer,” he said.

Nanyonjo’s transfer, according to Kalyango, was based on the school’s dismal performance in the 2020 Primary Leaving Examination (UPE), where 13 candidates passed in second grade and five in third grade, whereas the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) withheld results for 32 candidates over suspected malpractices.

Gomba District Chief Administrative Officer, Joseph Kisubi, said Nanyonjo had already been summoned to appear before the district disciplinary committee.

“We hope this time she will show up and explain why she refused to go to her new workstation where she was posted,” he said.
