The Bishop of Fort Portal Catholic Diocese, Rt. Rev. Robert Muhirwa, has urged Ugandans to make a name for themselves in things that add value to them and the country at large.

While sharing a sermon at the celebrations of the Uganda Martyrs at Namugongo Catholic shrine on Friday, Bishop Muhirwa, who was the main celebrant, said that it’s a shame to hear that Uganda is ranked highly when it comes to alcohol consumption.

“Uganda is the leading alcohol drinking country in East Africa, the 7th in Africa. Isn’t that a shame?

And as a consequence we have many problems which include domestic violence, chronic poverty & other related health problems,” said Bishop Muhirwa.

He also asked Christians to stop worshipping both God and the devil as they become double dealers in their faith.

“One of the early church fathers says it well, the blood of martyrs is the seed of Christians. As Ugandans, we cherish the faith of the Uganda Martyrs who died in Christ.

“Let us learn from the martyrs, turn away from witchcraft, let us adore the one true God and love him above all,” he said.

On the current economic challenges, Bishop Muhirwa urged Ugandans to turn to God.

“There are many challenges, like high prices of commodities, having sick people in our families, and high levels of unemployment, but do not give up, trust the Lord,” he said.
