The Electoral Commission has confirmed that they have already received a letter informing them of the changes within the leadership of the National Unity Platform party.

According to the EC spokesperson Paul Bukenya, the Commission received a letter from one Paul Ssimbwa Kagombe.

Ssimbwa and Moses Kibalama are the co-founders of the party that eventually evolved into NUP.

“The Commission will consider the contents of the letter in accordance with the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda, the provisions of the Political Party and Organisations Act, the Constitution of the Party (NUP), and based on our official records about the Party.”

We will officially respond to the above letter in due course,” said Bukenya.

Bukenya said that they issued the certificate of registration to NUP in August 2019, when the party was registered.

“As you are aware, NUP Party is a dully registered political party,” he said.

He further explained that anyone can write to a public institution like the Electoral Commission about a public institution or even a political party like NUP.

“That is why we then only consider your communication in accordance with the laws and regulations I have highlighted above and then reply to your letter, and guide you,” he said.

Bukenya’s comments come after Kibalama’s NUP faction opened up parallel headquarters in Kabowa earlier today.

The group displayed the NUP Certificate of Registration and challenged Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine, to join the officially registered party.

However, NUP spokesperson Joel Ssenyonyi also issued a statement where he termed the group as masqueraders. He urged the public to treat the masqueraders with the contempt they deserved.
