The former intelligence chief, General David Sejusa, has eulogized his fellow bush war veteran, Gen. Elly Tumwine.
In his tribute to the fallen General, Sejusa said that he first met Tumwine in 1973.
“I met Elly together with the Hon. John Nasasira in 1973. I was in Agakhan Sch and they were at St. Henry’s College Kitovu,” said Sejusa.
He further explained that at the time, Tumwine and Nasasira were in senior five while he was in senior three.
“We usually met at the house of Gordan Ndagara (brother to Nasasira, who was manager, Uganda Commercial Bank, Masaka Branch). When I joined Makerere, he (Tumwine) was in his final year. When he went to Monduli for the Army Cadet Course, I went to Dar es Salaam for the Police Cadet Course,” he said.
During the National Resistance Army (NRA) liberation war, Sejusa revealed that he was Tumwine’s second in command at Kabarega Unit(NRA).
“When he was shot at Bukomero, God enabled me and other comrades to evacuate him from the battlefield. We sent him to Kampala,” he said.
Sejusa stated that Tumwine’s survival from the bullet wounds became a testimony.
“We always talked about this miracle of his survival,” Sejusa said.
He added, “We have been together since. When I came from exile, he came to my home. As we hugged and cried. “
Sejusa said in his last moments with him, Tumwine called him about their impending retirement from the army.
“He sounded full of life and he told me about his vision and plans during retirement. People like General Elly Tumwine never die. How can they? Because the things they have done stay with us forever, “he said.
The duo was among the 34 generals that were listed to retire this year.
