There has been a flurry of reactions following the decision by the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) to cut off the water supply to numerous hospitals across the country over unpaid bills.

Among the affected healthcare facilities are the Uganda-China Friendship Hospital Naguru and Entebbe Grade B Hospital, which have outstanding water bill arrears amounting to Shs1.3 billion and Shs488 million, respectively.

NWSC defended its actions by stating, “NWSC incurs costs for power, chemicals, fuel for generators, and repair materials, among other essential production inputs. Suppliers of these inputs have disconnected their supplies. We are diligently working to collect revenue to sustain our operations. Four weeks ago, reminders were issued.”

However, the move by NWSC has sparked mixed reactions from the Ugandan public on social media.

Ian Gumisiriza expressed his viewpoint, saying, “People seem to forget that NWSC has its own bills to pay. NWSC does not receive any government subsidies and must cover its expenses. Some accounting officers deliberately refuse to settle water bills despite having the necessary funds. It is an act of sabotage.”

Apfreny commented, expressing surprise, “I am astonished that NWSC would cut off the water supply, especially in hospitals where it affects the common people. Why can’t the government intervene and find a solution?”

Irama Jane offered her perspective, advising, “Dear NWSC, I appreciate your response. However, these issues should be addressed at their root: the Ministry of Finance, the Executive, and Parliament. The failure to provide basic services such as water in healthcare facilities is causing immense suffering for the people.”

Meanwhile, NWSC had previously issued a warning last month to the Uganda Police and the Army regarding their outstanding arrears, which amounted to a substantial Shs19 billion.
