Police in Kassanda are currently in pursuit of three armed individuals who carried out a robbery at a mobile money agent shop and soda depot owned by Bonani Janvier Fils in Kalongo, Mubende District. During the incident, a police officer identified as Olaya Joseph was killed.

The robbery and fatal shooting occurred last evening at approximately 5:40 pm in Kyakitanga Village, Manyogaseka Sub-county, Kassanda District. The perpetrators, riding motorcycles, launched an attack on the shops, stealing various items of unknown value before fleeing the scene.

Upon receiving the report, the Kiganda Police Station swiftly mobilized a team, led by the Officer in Charge, to pursue the suspects and bring them to justice. Unfortunately, during the pursuit, the suspects shot Officer Olaya, who tragically succumbed to his injuries while being transported to Mubende Regional Referral Hospital.

The assailants also seized Officer Olaya’s magazine but left the firearm behind. However, a red Bajaj Boxer motorcycle with registration number UDX 755C, belonging to the suspects, has been recovered.

During the weekly police briefing on Monday, Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga highlighted a concerning trend of targeted attacks against mobile money dealers and banking agents. These attacks encompass follow-home and front-gate assaults, as well as direct physical attacks at the premises and during transit to and from banks.

Enanga emphasized the need for increased vigilance, altering routine patterns, reinforcing security measures such as employing guards and escort services and minimizing late-night movements to mitigate these risks.
