The Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Norbert Mao, announced on Tuesday that the government is pursuing the implementation of mandatory electronic voting for the 2026 General Elections.

Speaking to the media in Kampala, Mao said that this electoral reform is intended to combat ballot fraud and ensure the integrity of free and fair elections.

“I presented a bold initiative to the Cabinet to make electronic voting compulsory,” Mao said.

He also revealed that President Museveni is in favour of this idea and encouraged Ugandans to embrace it.

Explaining the concept of electronic voting, Mao clarified that voters would use various biometric methods, including fingerprints, eyelid scans, and facial recognition technology when they arrive at the polling station. These measures are designed to ensure the machine’s accuracy in verifying each voter’s identity.

Mao further explained that individuals will need to bring their voter slips, which contain unique barcodes. To cast their vote, they will input the barcode into the electronic voting machine to confirm their identity.

This process ensures that no one can use another person’s voter locator slip, enhancing the security and legitimacy of the electoral process.
