Lieutenant Colonel Peter Seku Kidemuka, the project engineer for the Uganda People’s Defense Force (UPDF) Engineers Brigade, overseeing the extensive renovation of Namboole Stadium, has announced that the project is now 72% complete.

The renovation project, which commenced in February 2022, has been progressing steadily, and the UPDF is optimistic that it will be finalized by November 30, 2023.

Kidemuka outlined the multi-phase approach taken in the renovation project, stating, “Phase one involved securing the 128 acres of land, which required evicting encroachers and fencing the entire area to establish clear boundaries. Phase two focused on upgrading and renovating the stadium to meet international standards, which included mechanical, electrical, and civil works both inside and around the stadium.”

The project engineer further detailed the ongoing work, highlighting the current phase, “We are now in the process of planting grass on the main playfield and training section. Simultaneously, we are installing the public address system, chairs, and fitting electrical and plumbing equipment, among other essential tasks.”

The renovation aims to modernize the stadium, making it suitable for international sporting events.

“We are dedicated to ensuring the renovation project is completed on time, and we are on track to meet our goal. The stadium is expected to host its first international match in March 2024,” he said.

Namboole is among the stadiums proposed by Uganda to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
