Leader of the National Unity Platform, Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine, has suspended Nyendo-Mukungwe Member of Parliament (MP) Hon. Mathias Mpuuga from the position of Deputy President (Central Region).

According to a brief statement shared on the party’s official social media pages, Mpuuga has been suspended for failing to provide any satisfactory explanation for receiving the Shs500 million ‘Service Award’ from Parliament.

“The President of the National Unity Platform has suspended Hon. Mathias Mpuuga from the position of Deputy President (Central Region) for engaging in actions of corruption and abuse of office — actions for which he has failed to provide any satisfactory explanation,” reads the statement.

The standoff between NUP and Mpuuga began when the party requested him to step down from his position as parliamentary commissioner, accusing him of corruption and abuse of office after he admitted to receiving Shs500 million from Parliament as a ‘Service Award.’ Mpuuga declined to step down, explaining that the said Shs500 million ‘Service Award’ money was granted to him by the Parliamentary Commission as gratuity, and thus he cannot be accused of any wrongdoing.

Since then, there has been a back-and-forth between Mpuuga and the party leaders.

Earlier this week, Mpuuga held a press conference where he vowed not to leave the party, stating that despite facing insults from the public and a section of party leaders and supporters, he will remain with the party, where he is one of the founding members.
