Makerere Researchers say combining Math with music will boost performance in the subject

Researchers at Makerere University have developed a music, dance, and drama model to enhance mathematics teaching in lower secondary schools. The innovative approach aims to boost learners’ performance in the subject.

Principal Investigator Dr. Sylvia Antonia Nakimera explained that despite government efforts, learners continue to struggle with mathematics. This prompted the research team to investigate the underlying causes and develop complementary solutions.

Their study revealed that teachers often teach mathematics after lunch when students are exhausted, using traditional methods that can be dull for learners. Additionally, some teachers lacked familiarity with the new lower secondary curriculum, hindering effective teaching.

To address these challenges, the researchers created a music, dance, and drama tool for teachers to engage their students. By incorporating music into teaching, learners can enjoy the learning process and retain information more effectively.

According to Dr. Nakimera, this innovative approach will not only improve learners’ understanding of mathematics but also make the subject more enjoyable and memorable.
