Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among has directed Clerk to Parliament Adolf Mwesige to call off plenary sittings for this week.

In a letter dated July 24 addressed to all members of Parliament, the Clerk to Parliament did not reveal any reason for the decision. Plenary is expected to resume next week on Tuesday, July 30, 2024. It’s important to note that Parliament sittings had resumed yesterday, July 23, after a month-long period of recess.

The decision comes a day after a section of the public held an anti-corruption march to Parliament where over 50 people were arrested. The protest, spearheaded mainly by the youth, started at around 11 am with participants carrying placards bearing different messages denouncing corruption.

Some of those who participated in the protest were heard calling for the resignation of the Speaker. Several groups that were arrested were remanded to Luzira Prison and will be returning to court on different dates next week.

Meanwhile, there is still a heavy security deployment in and around Kampala City.
