Police in Kampala have arrested 11 suspects involved in the robbery of Shs 47 million from a businessman in Kampala.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, Benjamin Ariong, 34, a businessman and resident of Kiduka Zone, Mutungo in Kampala, was targeted by a gang moving on boda bodas after withdrawing Shs 47 million from PostBank in Bugolobi.

The gang surrounded and attacked him in broad daylight. He initially managed to escape and ran toward the traffic police officers who were nearby, but the gang overpowered all of them since they were not armed. They took the bag containing the money.

“Ariong reported the matter to the police, and a case of aggravated robbery was opened at Jinja Road Police Station,” said Owoyesigyire.

Using CCTV footage captured during the incident, security operatives arrested 11 suspects. These are Benon Mutebi, Sharif Ssenfuma, Daniel Zziwa, Ibra Kiwanuka, Denis Ntale, Steven Kiiza, Jamada Bakaki, Joram Kato, Ibrahim Kisozi Kienyi, William Mugisha, and Caleb Kisambwe.

Some of the suspects were taken back to the scene after they confessed to the crime. They narrated how they executed the robbery and how much each was paid.

Each of the boda boda riders was paid Shs 300,000, while the rest shared the money depending on their contribution to the robbery.

Owoyesigyire said that a search conducted at the residences of the suspects led to the recovery of several exhibits, including three smartphones, feature phones, a forged national ID, a forged driving permit, an Exim Bank ATM card, two flat-screen TVs, and counterfeit US dollar notes.

So far, four suspects have been taken to court and remanded to Luzira Prison, while others are still being interrogated and will be produced before court soon.
