Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) is set to front the party’s secretary general and legislator Nathan Nandala Mafabi as their presidential candidate in the 2026 election.

The revelation was made by the party president, Patrick Oboi Amuriat, who stated that he is not standing again, as he is ready to back Mafabi.

Amuriat, who contested in the 2021 presidential election and finished third, said that he trusts Mafabi’s leadership skills and vision for the future of Uganda.

“After talking with my supporters and thinking carefully, I believe Nandala Mafabi is the right person to lead our party and the nation toward a better future,” Amuriat stated during the party’s weekly media briefing.

He, however, explained that his endorsement does not prevent others from running for the party presidency, as there are established rules for this process.

“We encourage anyone who wants to run for the party presidency to do so, as allowed by our party’s rules,” he said.

Amuriat also invited members of the FDC Katonga Faction who wish to leave that group to return to FDC.

FDC, which was once the strongest opposition party, split into factions last year, with the Katonga faction accusing the Amuriat-led Najjanankumbi faction of receiving money from President Yoweri Museveni. The Najjanankumbi faction vehemently denied the allegations.

The Katonga faction is currently in the process of registering a new political party, People’s Front for Freedom. However, the Electoral Commission rejected their proposed name and colors, saying they were similar to those of existing parties.
