National Unity Platform lawyer Samuel Muyizzi Mulindwa is set to contest for the Nyendo-Mukungwe parliamentary seat in Masaka City, a position currently held by former NUP member Mathias Mpuuga.

A poster of lawyer Muyizzi is circulating on social media, although he has not officially declared his intentions to stand in the upcoming 2026 general elections.

Muyizzi is a popular figure in opposition circles, not as a politician, but as a human rights lawyer and advocate in the High Court of Uganda. He has worked on high-profile cases and is the Chairperson of the Valuation Court in Kampala.

His intention to stand in the upcoming general election is seen as one that could give Mpuuga a strong challenge, should Mpuuga decide to run again.

In the 2021 general election, Mpuuga won the seat on the NUP ticket and was appointed Leader of the Opposition (LoP) and party Deputy President for the Buganda region. However, after serving for two and a half years, he was replaced by Joel Ssenyonyi as LoP. Mpuuga was named Commissioner of Parliament.

However, early last year, Mpuuga fell out with NUP after being exposed for his involvement in the controversial Shs1.7 billion ‘Service Award’, in which he is said to have pocketed Shs500 million.

NUP denounced him as their Commissioner and suspended him from the party, as well as from his position as Deputy President.

Mpuuga later formed his own political pressure group, The Democratic Alliance, which he has since stated will field candidates in the upcoming 2026 general elections.
