Residents in Masaka, Bukomansimbi, and Kyotera are living in fear after unknown individuals dropped threatening anonymous leaflets, commonly known as ‘Bijambiya’ letters.

The letters warn locals that they will soon be attacked by a panga-wielding gang. In a story run by NBS TV, the people behind the letters claim to be connected to top security officials, implying that the locals cannot do anything to prevent what is about to befall them.

The letters also specify the dates of the planned attacks, starting February 6.

Speaking about the letters, Army spokesperson, Acting Major General Felix Kulayigye, said they are on high alert to apprehend anyone planning such attacks. He further stated that, together with the police, they are closely monitoring the situation to arrest the masterminds behind the planned insecurity.

This is not the first time such anonymous letters have been distributed in the Greater Masaka region. In 2017 and 2021, similar letters were found in Lwengo, Rakai, Kalungu, Bukomansimbi, and Masaka districts.

The perpetrators followed through on some of their threats, and over 30 people were hacked to death by the panga-wielding gang.

During these periods, most residents would return home as early as 7 PM for fear of being attacked by the thugs.

Many suspects have been arrested and arraigned in court since then. However, with the latest wave of letters, the situation cannot be taken lightly.
