Masaka Chief Magistrate Abdullah Kayiza has remanded three bodyguards of National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine, to Masaka Main Prison after they were charged with aggravated robbery.

The accused—Achilleo Kivumbi, Gadafi Mugumya, and Grace Wakabi Smart—have been in detention for over five days.

According to the prosecution, the three men allegedly robbed Masaka-based journalist Margret Kayondo, who works for Radio Simba, on May 18, 2024. They reportedly took her green sweater and a Camon 12 mobile phone, valued at Shs 730,000.

The prosecution further claims the suspects used sharp knives and sticks during the attack. Court also heard that shortly after the robbery, they allegedly assaulted Zainab Namusaazi, a journalist with NBS TV, and damaged her video camera worth Shs 1.5 million.

Additionally, the trio is accused of stealing Shs 200,000 from Rodgers Mulungi and John Mukalaazi, as well as assaulting Drake Lubega and Haruna Ssekitto, whose mobile phone was also stolen.

The incident reportedly took place at Manja Village, Kisekka Sub-County in Lwengo District during the burial of Pascal Ssekasamba, where journalists had gathered to cover the event.

State prosecutor Michael Wakosesa informed the court that investigations into the case were still ongoing and requested an adjournment.

However, defense lawyer Samuel Muyiizi argued that the charges were exaggerated, pointing out that some of the allegations—such as the use of sharp objects—were not mentioned in the complainants’ original statements. He also raised concerns about the alleged torture of his clients during their arrest.

In response, the presiding magistrate advised the defense team to present their concerns before the High Court when the case proceeds to trial. The case was adjourned to March 13, 2025, when the accused are expected to reappear in court.
