The rate at which Kampala’s roads are flooding when it rains is alarming. We might soon need to buy boats to use during the rainy season.

With Kampala roads turning into rivers every time it rains, socially conscious individuals are always alerting fellow road users about the flooded roads.

Following the heavy downpour this morning, police have confirmed that five people have lost their lives due to the flooding.

Three yet-to-be-identified bodies were recovered from the Kinawataka area, while two children, identified as Otim Kisa Eliza (3 years old) and Ochaka Chon (11 months old), drowned in their home in Mulimira Zone, Bukoto.

Police preliminary reports indicate that the mother, Lenunu Rose Mary, had locked the children inside the house while she went about her work. She has since been arrested by Kira Road Police on allegations of negligence, as neighbors claim this was a recurring practice.

Police say that the intense rainfall also left many injured, as they registered several motor accidents and incidents of pedestrians being swept away by fast-moving water.

The Police Fire Prevention and Rescue Services have urged the public to take precautionary measures during heavy rains: • Avoid unnecessary movement during downpours to prevent accidents. • Boda boda riders are strongly advised not to risk crossing flooded roads and to wait until water levels recede for safe passage. • Residents should secure their homes and ensure the safety of children, especially during extreme weather conditions.
