Beatrice Nambi, wife of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister Hon. Norbert Mao, has officially announced her candidacy for Kampala Lord Mayor in the upcoming 2026 general elections.

Nambi made the declaration on Monday during a Muslim Iftar dinner at her Kampala residence, where she hosted a distinguished gathering of ministers, MPs, opposition leaders, and musicians.

Addressing her guests, Nambi expressed her determination to unseat Erias Lukwago, who has held the position since 2011. She also reflected on her previous attempt to run in the 2021 elections, where she was disqualified by the Electoral Commission.

“In 2020/21, they threw me out of the race on the grounds that I was not on the voters’ register,” she recounted. “But after the elections, I went straight to the Electoral Commission, and we resolved the matter. Now I am back, and I am confident that the Kampala Lord Mayor seat will be mine.”

Nambi’s 2021 candidacy was derailed after internal disputes within the Democratic Party (DP) led to a challenge against her nomination, resulting in her disqualification.

At the time, she had recently returned to Kampala from London following a separation from her then-husband, Martin Kayanja.

Despite that setback, Nambi is now gearing up for a fresh attempt, positioning herself as the candidate who can bring real change to the capital city.

During her speech, Nambi did not hold back in her criticism of Lukwago’s leadership, accusing him of failing to deliver meaningful progress for Kampala.

“For the last 15 years, he has done us no good,” she stated. “He is not vocal enough, he has failed to attract foreign investors, and the city is in a state of decay. Kampala needs to be transformed into a place that everyone is proud of.”
