Ofwono Opondo has confirmed he will step down from his role as Government Spokesman to contest for Member of Parliament (MP) representing the elderly in the 2026 elections.

He plans to challenge Dominic Mafwabi Gidudu, the current MP for the elderly in the Eastern Region, confidently stating, “I have what it takes to knock him out.”

Speaking on The Capital Gang show today, Opondo said that after 26 years of service as a government communicator, the time had come to transition into the legislature, where he hopes to contribute to meaningful reform. He added that consultations with the NRM and close allies are underway to shape his campaign strategy.

“I wrote to the President notifying him about the conclusion of my tenure in three months,” he revealed, noting that he will have officially stepped down by the end of this month to prepare for the 2026 race.

A former journalist with New Vision, Ofwono Opondo was appointed Executive Director of the Uganda Media Centre on July 1, 2013. Prior to that, he served as Director of Information and Public Relations at the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Secretariat from 2002, succeeding Winnie Byanyima.

He also served as the NRM Spokesperson from 2003 and was an active figure in President Yoweri Museveni’s election task forces from 2001 to 2016.
