Former Leader of Opposition (LoP) and Nyendo-Mukungwe MP, Mathias Mpuuga, has unveiled a new political party, the Democratic Front (DF), ahead of the 2026 general elections, under the slogan “Real Change, Act Now.”

According to a certificate from the Electoral Commission, DF is the result of renaming the Green Partisan Party.

Speaking at the launch event in Namirembe, where the party headquarters are located, Mpuuga said DF is open to working with all political parties to bring change to Uganda.

“We’ll work with other parties to cause change in the country. The fracturing of the opposition is a big concern to us,” Mpuuga said.

He, however, explained that the party is a home for logical thinkers, progressive minds, and those who believe in political ethics and disciplined service delivery.

The former LoP stated that they have a large pool from which to draw new members and leaders without encroaching on existing parties.

“If you made a sample out there on the streets, over 70% of Ugandan voters belong to no party, and the reasons are various. The Democratic Front has the opportunity to draw from that rich array of citizenry that seeks a political home,” he said.

The unveiling event was attended by several MPs, including Hon. Abed Bwanika, Hon. Michael Kakembo, and Hon. Juliet Nakabuye.

This comes 14 months after Mpuuga was suspended as the National Unity Platform (NUP)’s deputy president for the Buganda region.
