The Kampala Metropolitan Police have arrested 21 people, including two women, suspected of being part of a criminal gang that staged a series of violent robberies in the city center on Saturday afternoon.

According to police spokesperson Patrick Onyango, the group targeted crowds near the National Theatre and UBC roundabout as thousands of people moved toward Kyadondo to witness President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s nomination as the NRM presidential flag bearer.

Dressed in yellow T-shirts, the suspects blended into the crowd and attacked unsuspecting pedestrians, motorists, and business owners. Onyango said the coordinated robberies began around 2:00 p.m., with several victims losing phones, handbags, cash, and other personal belongings.

CCTV footage from the city’s security camera network played a key role in tracking the suspects to various hideouts. They were later arrested and detained at the Central Police Station (CPS) in Kampala and Wandegeya Police Station.

“One suspect sustained injuries while trying to escape arrest and is currently receiving medical attention. Contrary to rumors, no fatalities were recorded,” Onyango clarified.

Statements have already been taken from several victims, and case files are being prepared for prosecution. Police say investigations are still ongoing, with more footage under review to identify additional suspects.

“We urge anyone who was affected but hasn’t reported to come forward immediately,” Onyango said, adding that the suspects will be charged with simple robbery and assault.

He emphasized that security operations aimed at dismantling criminal gangs in the city are ongoing and will not relent.
