Police in Busoga East have opened investigations into an escape in which seven suspects broke out of court cells at the Mayuge Magisterial area in Katwe Zone, Mayuge District.

The fugitives include Juma Swamakomu, Jamali Elapasi, Ryan Tenywa, Hussein Isabirye, and Abdul Mukambwe—who were facing charges of housebreaking, malicious damage, and aggravated robbery. Two others, Juma Mugoya and Fred Kaneene, were awaiting trial on charges of aggravated defilement.

According to court supervisor Abdullah Igulwa, the incident occurred on August 29 when both the Grade One and Chief Magistrates were away conducting public hearings on land disputes.

All security officers attached to the court had reportedly accompanied the magistrates, leaving the court premises unguarded. It was during this lapse that the suspects seized the opportunity to escape.

Busoga East Police spokesperson, Michael Kafayo, confirmed the escape and said a joint security operation is underway to track down the suspects.

Kafayo warned that, in addition to their original charges, the suspects will face fresh counts of escaping from lawful custody once they are re-arrested.

He also appealed to the public, especially relatives and associates of the escapees, to share any information that may lead to their capture.

“The law will catch up with them,” Kafayo assured.

“We urge the public to remain vigilant and report any sightings to the nearest police station.”
