Police in Arua City have arrested six Congolese nationals accused of attempting to circulate counterfeit US dollars, while several of their accomplices remain on the run.

The suspects were apprehended late Friday in Upper Bibia Cell, Pangisha Ward, Arua Central Division, as they tried to exchange fake notes worth $300,000 (about Shs 1.1 billion). The counterfeit cash had been carefully bundled into three packs and was being traded for Ugandan shillings.

According to Richard Amvuku, the officer in charge of operations at Arua Central Police Station (CPS), the arrests followed a community tip-off that led security teams to the suspects. Those arrested include Joseph Manikeleza, Asiha Mumbere, Aquinza Dudu Mitira, Sadraq Kabutala, Jean Pierre Hassan, and Musa Muhammad.

The group is currently facing charges of dealing in counterfeit currency and attempting to defraud members of the public. Police say investigations are ongoing, and a manhunt has been launched for the other suspects still at large.

Authorities have since urged residents to remain vigilant and to report suspicious activities, stressing that timely information from the public remains crucial in combating such crimes.
