Former Kampala Woman MP, Nabila Naggayi, has been nominated to contest for the Kampala Lord Mayor position in the 2026 General Election as an independent candidate. She was the NUP flag bearer for the same position in the 2021 election, which she lost.

“I am a leader, I have the capacity and experience,” she said.

“I want to represent the people of Kampala, but not on behalf of any party. My contract will be between me and the people who vote for me,” she added.

Naggayi explained that political parties often dictate how leaders should serve their people, something she finds problematic, hence her decision to stand as an independent.

She was last on the ballot in 2021 but was defeated by the incumbent, Erias Lukwago, who secured a commanding 194,592 votes against her 60,082.

Since that loss, she has kept a low political profile.

Lukwago, a two-term Lord Mayor, remains a formidable incumbent, and Naggayi’s return introduces a familiar but controversial figure back into the race. NUP has already fronted Nakawa East Member of Parliament, Ronald Balimwezo.

The stage is now set for what could be a heated contest for the city’s top civic seat.
