The Chairperson of Uganda’s Electoral Commission (EC), Justice Simon Byabakama, has confirmed that 30 presidential hopefuls have so far submitted their supporter forms as the country gears up for the nomination exercise later this month.

Addressing the media at the Commission’s offices, Justice Byabakama explained that the law requires each aspirant to gather signatures from at least 100 registered voters in a minimum of 98 districts nationwide. The Commission’s role is to carefully verify these submissions to ensure all supporters are valid and properly registered.

“Our responsibility is to cross-check the names and signatures. Once we confirm that an aspirant has met the requirements, we issue a certificate of compliance. This certificate then allows them to pay the nomination fees and proceed with the process,” he said.

Justice Byabakama also urged aspirants to schedule their nomination appointments on either 23rd or 24th September to avoid congestion at the Commission offices.

While commending those who have already submitted their forms, the EC chairperson warned that time is running out for others.

“We opened submissions on 11th August. Today is 17th September. Any serious aspirant should have no difficulty securing 100 signatures per district. I urge those who have not yet submitted to act promptly so we have adequate time to verify their forms,” he said.

The Chairperson revealed that the verification process has already uncovered irregularities. Some supporters listed are underage, as young as 13 and 16, while others are registered in districts different from those indicated by aspirants.

“Errors such as listing minors or mismatched voter details can easily disqualify a candidate. Aspirants must exercise caution and ensure their forms are accurate,” Byabakama cautioned.
