NUP submits fresh signatures to EC after rejection of Bobi Wine’s list

The National Unity Platform (NUP) has submitted a fresh batch of signatures to the Electoral Commission (EC) in a final push to secure the nomination of its leader, Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine, for the 2026 presidential election.

This follows the EC’s recent rejection of NUP’s initial submission, ruling that the party had failed to meet the constitutional requirement of at least 100 registered voters from two-thirds of Uganda’s districts. The decision triggered outrage within NUP, with party officials accusing the Commission of deliberately frustrating Bobi Wine’s candidacy.

NUP Secretary-General David Lewis Rubongoya confirmed the new submission on Sunday, describing it as an overwhelming response to Kyagulanyi’s nationwide call for support.

“Thousands more signatures have been delivered to the EC for Bobi Wine’s nomination,” Rubongoya said, vowing that the party would “leave no stone unturned” in ensuring Kyagulanyi’s place on the ballot. He praised district mobilisation teams for their “remarkable work in such a short time.”

The EC has issued similar compliance notices to other aspirants, including Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) president Mugisha Muntu, whose verification results showed he had secured the required support in only 48 of 98 districts.

Justice Simon Byabakama, the EC chairperson, has reminded all candidates that the nomination window closes on 24 September 2025, after which the final list of presidential contenders will be confirmed.

Kyagulanyi is scheduled to be nominated on Tuesday, 23 September, the same day as incumbent President Yoweri Museveni. The two are expected to stage parallel rallies, with Bobi Wine addressing supporters at Katwe Grounds, while Museveni will hold his at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds.
