Main opposition leader, Robert Kyagulanyi, better known as Bobi Wine, will today at 2:00 pm be formally nominated as a presidential candidate for the 2026 general election.

The nomination will take place at the Electoral Commission’s headquarters in Lweza-Lubowa, Wakiso District, according to his party, the National Unity Platform (NUP).

The 43-year-old pop star-turned-politician is gearing up for a high-stakes rematch with President Yoweri Museveni, who has ruled Uganda since 1986 and is seeking a seventh term on the National Resistance Movement (NRM) ticket.

Museveni, 81, was officially nominated on Tuesday, anchoring his campaign on stability and economic progress as Uganda pushes toward middle-income status.

Bobi Wine first challenged Museveni in the 2021 election, running one of the most formidable opposition campaigns in decades. He rejected the results after losing, alleging widespread electoral fraud, state intimidation, and a brutal crackdown on his supporters. That campaign, which drew global attention, was marred by arrests of opposition figures, violent dispersal of rallies, and deadly clashes that left dozens dead.

His 2026 nomination follows a tense standoff with the Electoral Commission, which last week initially rejected NUP’s list of supporters. The party launched an emergency mobilisation drive, resubmitting thousands of signatures that were later verified, securing Bobi Wine’s place on the ballot.

Following today’s nomination, Bobi Wine is expected to address supporters at a rally at Kaala Play Grounds in Nateete, Kampala.

Others set to be nominated today include Forum for Democratic Change’s Nandala Mafabi, and Alliance for National Transformation’s Mugisha Muntu.
