“Even before the Mpuuga scenario, there were rumors they wanted to oust us,” senior lawyer Sseggona says after losing NUP ticket to Kadongo Kamu singer Walukaga

Senior lawyer and Busiro County East MP, Medard Lubega Sseggona, has spoken out after the National Unity Platform (NUP) denied him the party flag for the 2026 elections, handing it instead to Kadongo Kamu singer and Kyengera Town Council Mayor, Mathias Walukaga.

Appearing on NBS TV, Sseggona maintained calmness, saying he accepted the outcome without bitterness.

“I hope you’re not talking about divine favor, because if it were, I would bleed. How I was defeated was simply because of human favor, and that’s fine with me,” he said.

Sseggona dismissed suggestions that he lost the ticket because he had overstayed in Parliament, noting that several longer-serving politicians had retained their party endorsement.

“I don’t believe I was denied the ticket because I’ve stayed too long—after all, there are people who have been here longer. I refuse to throw tantrums. Destruction is not in my DNA,” he added.

The legislator also pledged to steer clear of conflicts that could harm his party or its leader, Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine.

“I will not engage in debates that destroy my brother Kyagulanyi, the party, or the struggle we’ve all been part of. I will die in defense of my country, and I will fight any deviation from the commitments we made to our people,” Sseggona stated.

He further hinted that internal moves to edge him out had been ongoing even before recent divisions in the party.

“Even before the Mpuuga (former Leader of Opposition) scenario, there were rumors that they wanted to oust us,” he revealed.

Sseggona is widely seen as an ally of Mathias Mpuuga, the former Leader of the Opposition who was ousted from his party leadership role following corruption allegations.

He was among the MPs who defended Mpuuga during the fallout. Both politicians joined NUP in 2020 after leaving the Democratic Party (DP) Bloc.

Born in 1975, Sseggona marked his 50th birthday on September 1. Beyond politics, he is a seasoned lawyer, serving as managing partner at Lukwago and Co. Advocates since 2003, with a career spanning years of defending the rights of political prisoners.

Sseggona has represented Busiro County East in Parliament since 2011, and his next political steps remain closely watched as Walukaga prepares to carry the NUP flag into the 2026 race.
