The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced fresh nominations for local government council positions in several districts following the deaths of some candidates who had already been nominated for the 2026 elections.

In a statement dated October 23, 2025, EC chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama said the new nomination exercise will be conducted from Monday, October 27 to Tuesday, October 28, 2025.

Byabakama explained that the directive applies to all electoral areas across the country where duly nominated candidates have since passed away. He said the decision aligns with electoral laws that require the Commission to reopen nominations in cases where a candidate dies before polling day.

“Previously nominated candidates in the affected positions shall not be required to undergo nomination again,” the EC statement clarified.

While the Commission did not disclose the exact number of affected districts or positions, reports indicate that at least five local government candidates have died since the nomination exercise closed on September 24, 2025.

Among those confirmed is Elijah Kizza, 58, a National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate for the position of Sub-county Chairperson of Nangabo in Wakiso District, who collapsed and died during a campaign rally on October 18.

In Mukono District, Sarah Nakato, 42, an opposition candidate representing the National Unity Platform (NUP) for a municipal division councillor seat, also passed away on October 20 after suffering malaria-related complications.

The Electoral Commission said the new nominations will ensure that all affected positions have eligible candidates before the upcoming 2026 local government elections.
