Security forces have shot dead Christian Asuman Muganzi, the alleged mastermind behind the November 1 coordinated attacks on security installations in Uganda’s Rwenzori sub-region.

The incident occurred during a midday operation at his traditional shrine in Kakuka Parish, Bundibugyo District.

According to Albert Kaliruga, the Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Bundibugyo, Muganzi was killed at around 12:30 p.m. after he resisted arrest.

“Security forces tracked him down to his shrine in Kakuka Parish, where he had been hiding,” Kaliruga said.

Police and intelligence reports reveal that Muganzi, a self-proclaimed traditional healer from Kakukha II village, Sindila Sub-county, had allegedly turned his shrine into a recruitment and indoctrination centre.

Under the pretext of renovating the shrine, Muganzi is said to have gathered followers from Bundibugyo and Kagadi, performing rituals and giving charms to “spiritually fortify” them for battle.

On 1 November, Muganzi reportedly dispatched his group—armed with guns, pangas, and catapults—to attack Malindi and Kakukha army detachments.

During the Malindi attack, the assailants killed Private Samuel Kwesiga, his wife Annitah Nayebare, and injured Private Erias Twongyirwe before burning several homes and advancing towards Kakukha.

Security forces swiftly intercepted the attackers, killing two and arresting several others, including minors.
