Brig Gen Richard Tukachungurwa has been named the new chairperson of the General Court Martial, following a communication issued by State House on 25 November 2025. He replaces Brigadier General Robert Freeman Mugabe, who has been in office since 12 July 2022.

Before his appointment, Brig Gen Tukachungurwa served as the Judge Advocate of the same court. The letter, addressed to the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, announced a comprehensive reshuffle affecting the General Court Martial as well as Division and Unit Court Martials across the country.

With this new role, Brig Gen Tukachungurwa takes charge of one of the most influential judicial bodies in the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), which is mandated to try offences committed by serving soldiers.
