Court sets ruling date in Walukaga’s disqualification case

The High Court will announce its decision on 22 December in a case challenging the disqualification of musician Mathias Walukaga from the Busiro East parliamentary race.

Justice Rogers Kinobe set the ruling date after confirming that all parties had met requirements for filing and responding to court documents. The judge emphasised the need for speed, noting that election-related cases carry strict timelines.

Walukaga dragged the Electoral Commission to court after he was barred from contesting for the seat on grounds that he did not have the minimum academic qualifications. He insists he was properly nominated and that his academic papers — including a Mature Age certificate verified by the National Council for Higher Education — were legitimate and still in force.

The Electoral Commission maintains the opposite, arguing that the certificate had expired at the time of nomination, rendering him ineligible.

The court’s ruling will determine whether Walukaga returns to the ballot or remains out of the 2026 race — a decision that could reshape the Busiro East campaign landscape.
