Police in Kabalagala are investigating a case in which a 22-year-old woman was allegedly assaulted by three unidentified boda boda riders in Muyenga, Kampala.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala, the woman had been returning home from a birthday party in Bugolobi at around 4:00 am when the incident occurred. She lives in Nsangi, Wakiso district.
Police say the woman was unfamiliar with the area and first attempted to hire a boda boda rider who rejected her proposed fare. She then agreed to pay another rider Shs 15,000 to take her home.
However, during the journey, the first rider reportedly signalled two other boda boda riders, who began trailing the motorcycle carrying the woman. The rider transporting her is said to have diverted from the normal route, passing through the Industrial Area before heading towards Muyenga.
In her statement to police, the woman reported that the riders stopped at a secluded spot, where she was attacked and robbed of her handbag containing cash and two mobile phones. She was later assisted by passersby and taken to hospital for treatment.
Police have condemned the attack and urged members of the public to be especially cautious when travelling at night.
“We advise people to avoid moving alone late at night and to stick to familiar or well-lit routes,” Kawala said. She added that using trusted boda boda riders or recognised service providers can reduce risks associated with night travel.
The search for the suspects is ongoing.
