The People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) has raised fresh concern over the health of veteran opposition politician Dr. Kizza Besigye, saying his condition worsened dramatically, prompting a late-night transfer from Luzira Prison to a private hospital in Bugolobi under heavy security.
In a statement released on Tuesday evening, the party said Besigye’s health had reached a “critical” stage, accusing prison authorities and the government of failing to provide him with adequate medical care. The group argued that his continued detention, despite his condition, violates his constitutional rights.
“It is tragic that someone who has spent his life fighting for the health and freedom of Ugandans is now being denied basic medical dignity,” the statement said, adding that responsibility for his wellbeing lies squarely with the authorities.
PFF called for immediate and unrestricted access to Besigye by his personal doctors and family members, warning that holding him under the current conditions could amount to cruel and inhumane treatment.
Dr. Besigye, 69, a four-time presidential contender, has been in detention since November 2024. He is facing grave charges, including treason, linked to allegations that he participated in a long-running plot, both inside and outside Uganda, to overthrow the government by force.
The government insists that the legal process is being followed. However, PFF and other opposition figures have repeatedly dismissed the charges as politically driven, arguing they are intended to sideline Besigye ahead of the 2026 general elections.
In recent months, Besigye has reportedly been hospitalised several times, with chronic hypertension and other age-related health complications cited. His supporters maintain that prison conditions have worsened his health, intensifying calls for his release or access to specialised medical care.
