The Electoral Commission has suspended all elections in Butebo District after violent incidents disrupted polling and resulted in the destruction and loss of key election materials, including ballot papers.
In a statement released on Thursday, the Commission said disturbances were reported in several sub-counties shortly after voting materials were delivered, making it impossible for polling to proceed as planned.
According to the Commission, the scale of the disruptions compromised the credibility of the process, forcing officials to halt the elections across the entire district. “Due to the damage and loss of critical election materials, the Commission has decided to postpone elections for all elective positions in Butebo District to protect the integrity of the electoral exercise,” the statement read.
The affected polls include the elections for District Chairperson, Directly Elected District Councillors, and District Women Councillors.
Election officials noted that the violence erupted soon after materials reached polling areas, leaving no option but to call off the exercise.
The Commission said it will announce fresh election dates after reviewing the security situation and ensuring that conditions allow for a peaceful and credible vote.
Meanwhile, residents, candidates, agents, and supporters in Butebo District have been urged to remain calm and uphold law and order as authorities work to resolve the situation.
