Tororo Chief Magistrate’s Court has dismissed a request for a vote recount in the Tororo District Woman MP election.
The petition was filed by incumbent MP Sarah Opendi of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) after she lost the January 15 polls to independent candidate Angella Akoth. Akoth secured 78,542 votes, narrowly beating Opendi, who received 78,507 votes—a difference of just 35 votes.
Chief Magistrate Irene Nantebya ruled that the ballot boxes had been tampered with, making it impossible to rely on them for a recount. She reported that two of the 11 ballot boxes had broken seals, while four others showed signs of physical interference.
“Once the integrity of the ballot boxes is compromised, a recount cannot be conducted, as the results would be unreliable,” Nantebya stated.
With the court’s decision, Akoth’s victory is upheld, confirming her as the duly elected Tororo District Woman MP.
Opendi, who has served as Tororo District Woman MP since 2011 and previously held the position of Minister of State for Health (General Duties), filed the petition following her narrow defeat.
