Police in Iganga district have arrested four people suspected of running an online scam using fake social media accounts in the name of First Daughter Natasha Museveni Karugire.

According to police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke, the arrests followed a formal complaint from Museveni Karugire after impostors opened fraudulent TikTok and WhatsApp accounts pretending to represent her.

Rusoke said investigations led to the arrest of Isabirye Ashiraf, Mulondo Rahman, Kakaire Zubair and Egesa Sharif.

The suspects allegedly targeted members of the public by claiming to offer financial assistance and then demanding registration or processing fees.

Police used cyber-forensic techniques to trace the suspects and recovered several mobile phones and multiple SIM cards believed to have been used to carry out the scam.

The four suspects are expected to be charged with cyber fraud and offences related to impersonation.

Police have cautioned the public to be extremely careful when dealing with offers made on social media platforms, warning against sending money for registration or processing fees.

Rusoke noted that such scams are becoming increasingly common, citing cases where victims have lost large sums of money, especially in fraudulent visa and overseas job schemes.

He urged the public to always verify online information through official channels before making any payments.
