Police in Kagadi District have arrested a police officer accused of fatally shooting a Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldier during a community football match.

The suspect, identified only as Umar and attached to Kyaterekera Police Station, is alleged to have shot Omuhereza Akugizibwe Tuhaise on Sunday evening in Kyaterekera Town Council.

The shooting happened at Kitumba Playground during the final match of a local football tournament between Super Lions FC and Lyanda FC. Preliminary reports indicate that a disagreement broke out after the deceased reportedly refused to pay the full Shs2,000 entrance fee to watch the match, instead offering Shs1,000.

Albertine region police spokesperson Julius Hakiza confirmed the incident, saying the soldier’s body was taken to Kagadi General Hospital mortuary, where it remains as police await a postmortem examination.

Hakiza said the police officer involved has been arrested, but investigations are still ongoing to establish exactly how the incident unfolded and what led to the shooting.
