The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has safely moved 43 Ugandan students out of Iran as fighting between United States, Israel and Iran continues to escalate.
The students were first gathered from different parts of the country, with priority given to those studying in Tehran, where tensions were highest. They were then transported by road to Türkiye, crossing the border before proceeding to Istanbul, where they are now waiting to return home to Uganda.
Uganda’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs in charge of Regional Cooperation, John Mulimba, said the evacuation was challenging because of the unstable security situation and the closure of airspace in the region.
He explained that most of the affected students were studying in Tehran, which has been at the centre of the conflict. The government therefore decided to move them out first to ensure their safety.
Mulimba added that evacuating people from Iran at the moment is complicated due to constant changes in the security situation. However, he assured the public that government efforts are ongoing to help any remaining Ugandans who may still be stranded.
The ministry has also advised Ugandans still in the affected areas to remain indoors, avoid unnecessary movement, and stay in contact with Ugandan embassies through online communication.
Diplomatic missions in the region are expected to receive the evacuated students and coordinate their safe journey back home through neighbouring countries.
