President Yoweri Museveni has rejected the resignation of Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) Chairperson Mariam Wangadya and directed her to continue serving in the position.
Wangadya revealed this on Tuesday while appearing before the Committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (COSASE).
She said that after submitting her resignation letter to the President, Museveni declined to accept it and instead instructed her to remain in office and continue executing her mandate.
On July 6, 2026, Wangadya wrote to Museveni tendering her resignation as chairperson of the Commission.
“I hereby tender my resignation as Chairperson of the Uganda Human Rights Commission. I thank you for the opportunity to serve Uganda over the years in the promotion and protection of human rights,” she wrote.
Her resignation came days after she publicly criticised Museveni over his appointments to the Commission.
Wangadya, who has headed the UHRC since 2023, accused the President of turning the institution into a “dumping ground” for failed politicians.
She said the appointments demonstrated a lack of respect for the Commission despite its important role in protecting and promoting the rights of Ugandans.
