Three prison officers injured, two guns stolen as armed assailants attempt to break into Kyegegwa Prison

Three Uganda Prisons Service officers were injured and two guns were stolen after armed assailants attempted to break into Kyegegwa Government Prison early Friday morning.

According to Uganda Prisons Service spokesperson Frank Baine Mayanja, the attack happened at about 1am when the assailants tried to force their way into the prison.

The attackers reportedly targeted three officers who were on duty as night sentries, injuring them before taking their firearms.

The stolen guns, registered as No. UG PRI 563615124 and No. UG Pol. 565828358, were each loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition.

The injured officers are No. 6972 Sergeant Warder Kalisa Titus, No. 11423 Sergeant Wardress Nakuya Suzan Margret and No. 12980 Warder Odongo Joshua.

They were rushed to Kyegegwa General Hospital for treatment.

Despite the attack, no prisoner escaped from the facility.

Other security agencies were immediately notified and investigations into the incident are underway. Security teams are also searching for the assailants and the stolen firearms.

Uganda Prisons Service has appealed to anyone with information that could help identify or arrest the suspects or recover the guns to call the toll-free number 0800144144 or report to the nearest police station.
